Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a disease affecting blood vessels & nerves supplying arms.

Why it develops?

It occurs due to compression of blood vessels and/or nerves passing from space between collar bone & 1st rib. This compression can be due to various reasons like additional cervicle rib, abnormal muscle band etc.

What are the symptoms?

  • Arm pain/Neck pain
  • Hand/arm numbness & tingling
  • Symptoms worsening with activity
  • Finger blackening(gangrene)
  • Upper limb swelling with pain(DVT)

    Your vascular surgeon can help you to confirm diagnosis & do treatment to relieve your symptoms. Doctor will do your assessment & may advice you few tests like X-ray, NCV/EMG,CT scan/MR

    What are the treatment options?

    After confirming diagnosis if,

    1. Predominant nerve compression present:
      Physiotherapy for 6-12 weeks
      Surgical decompression if needed
    2. Predominant artery/vein compression present:
      Surgical decompression + repair of artery/vein

    What is the duration of procedure? How many days I have to remain admitted in hospital?

    Duration of procedure is 2 to 3 hours. You have to remain admitted in hospital for total 3 to 4 days.

    Results of the procedure?

    Immediate relief of pain, speedy recovery of wounds. Minimal post-surgery site pain, easily controlled by medications.
