What’s Permacath?

Pemacath (Permanent dialysis catheter) is a special line placed in neck of patients requiring dialysis. The characteristic feature of permacath is that it remains below skin.

There are certain advantages of permacath:

  • Less chances of infection
  • Less chances of blockage
  • Comfortable neck movements
  • Covered under clothes(not visible outside to others)

When do I need to undergo Permacath placement?

When all veins are exhausted/not suitable for new AV fistula creation, vascular surgeon / nephrologist may suggest this option.

Duration of procedure ? When can I take discharge?

15 minutes procedure time. Discharge within 1 hour of procedure.

Any precautions to prevent blockage in permacath?

Your care giver must flush it with heparin saline/cathflush after each use to prevent blockage.

When can dialysis be started from Permacath?

Immediately.
